A bit of beer,
         some sleeping pills,
                              and coke.

If you were here -
        the evening would be perfect;

Except, of course for
          the beer,
                   the pills,
                            and the coke!

Preparing For A Visit From St. Nicholas in 1959 - jim Young “Childhood joyland, mystic merry toyland,  Once you pass its borders, you can ne’er return again.” - Glen MacDonough and Victor Herbert If you shop at Costco, you might think that the Christmas season begins in late July. However, I remember the days when Christmas items didn’t appear on the shelves in Woolworths until after the Hallowe’en stuff was put away in early November. The first snowfall of the season was an indication that Christmas was quickly approaching. The Eaton’s Santa Claus Parade on TV was also a pretty reliable sign that the time was nigh. But for me, Christmas officially began with an Eaton’s Christmas Catalogue. And Oh! What a glorious time it was! I remember coming home from school to see the Eaton’s Christmas Catalogue sitting with the mail on the passthrough to the dining room. I had two older sisters and I knew I would have to bide my time until they had a chance to have their rightful first look....

Published In The Great North Arrow, January 1, 2025: GST/HST Tax Break - Blessing or Burden

- jim Young “Why does a small tax increase cost you two hundred dollars and a substantial tax cut save you thirty cents?” - anon I remember a conversation regarding taxes I once had with my father's Aunt Dora when I was a young adult. I had complained to Aunt Dora about paying taxes. Aunt Dora quickly reminded me that I should be grateful that I was in a position to be able to pay taxes. The message was kind of a cross between a lesson to accept what I could not change and be grateful for the  things I have in life. I took that wise lesson to heart and to this day, I do not object to my responsibility to pay my fair share of taxes; at least in principle.  What I do object to is the government’s wisdom (or lack thereof) in defining what a “fair share” of my taxes are and their ability (or lack thereof) in the management of the revenues they receive from taxation. But just like everyone else… I will gladly accept any tax break offered to me. So why shouldn’t I reap the benefits...
