Meme Debunked - Rubio’s Family Fled Communist Cuba

Following Batista’s coup in 1952, the U.S. Government immediately recognized the new Cuban government under the dictatorship of Batista supplying Cuba with weapons, military, financial and diplomatic support. They trained the Cuban police force on how to suppress the opposition.
The U.S. also turned a blind eye to Batista's alliance with the Mafia including gangsters such as Meyer Lansky who controlled Havana's hotels, gambling and prostitution.
THAT was the Capitalist Government the Rubio's fled.
They came to the U.S. as immigrants but not as refugees. By Marco Rubio's own admission his parents would not likely be permitted entry into the U.S. today under Rubio’s own immigration policies. As landed immigrants the Rubio’s did not even bother to apply for U.S. citizenship for almost 20 years… and 4 years after Marco was born. This of course makes Rubio a "birth-right" citizen. It’s interesting to note that in 2015 (around the time when Rubio said, “Donald Trump is a serious threat to the future of our party, and our country.”) Rubio stated he was opposed to Trump’s proposal to end birth-right citizenship. Rubio was also once a defendant in a federal lawsuit opposing Trump’s attempt to abolish it by an executive order.
If Marco Rubio’s family did truly once rely on food stamps it’s also interesting to note that Rubio proposed a tax plan that would in part eliminate food stamps.
As the first Rubio family member to attend college, the Rubio family did not have the financial means to afford Marco’s further education. Rubio relied on scholarships and student loans of about $100,000 for which he was forced to use deferment and forbearance options before being in a position to pay them off but only after he received an $800,000 advance for a book he wrote. (Not a lot of students get that lucky.)
When the Rubios lived in Cuba, college and further education was a luxury that was only available to the wealthy and the elite under the CAPITALIST regime of Batista. Primary education was legally compulsory and free but not accessible to a large portion of the population. However, had the Rubio’s chosen to remain in Cuba, by the time Marco was old enough to attend college, it would have been provided to him free of charge, after serving 2 years in the military. (Even bone spurs won’t automatically keep you out of the military in Cuba. There are many desk jobs suitable for those in the armed forces with minor medical inflictions.)
It should also be remembered that scholarships (in part) and student loans get their funding through the Department of Education which received significant budget cuts in 2025 from DOGE.
“He won a shock election for Senate at 39 and is now the best Secretary of State in history!”
I’ll admit, I’m not really sure what a “shock election” is. If it was a shock because Rubio was just 39, there have been at least ½ dozen men younger than Rubio to be elected to the senate, including Joe Biden.
If it was a shock because he and Bob Menendez were the only two Hispanic Americans in the Senate - I thought Rubio was opposed to DEI.
As far as Rubio being the “best Secretary of State in history”? Well, that’s pretty subjective. So I’ll concede that as being correct - providing your standards are low enough to support it.
