Rinty's Shepherd's Pie

The secret to really good shepherd's pie of course is to use real German Shepherd. If you're too squeamish for that you can always substitute ground beef.

Cook Time: 20 min.
Total Time: 1 hour, 20 min.

Servings: 12

Stuff Required:
  • 10 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into small pieces
  • 3 tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 large onion Spanish type, chopped
  • 2 cubes of beef bouillon
  • 1 ½ pounds of "ground beef" *wink* wink*
  • 1 cup vegetables, mixed, frozen
  • 2 tsps garlic salt (divided)
  • 1 tsp salt (divided)
  • 1 tsp pepper (divided)
  • ½ sweet pepper, seeded & chopped
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tbsp margarine or butter (divided)
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, grated
Do This:
  1. Preheat oven to 425° F. 
  2. Boil potatoes.
  3. Brown onions in oil in a frying pan.
  4. Dissolve bouillon in ¾ cup of boiling water.
  5. Add beef, vegetables, 1 tsp of garlic salt, ½ tsp salt, ½ tsp pepper, sweet pepper and bouillon mix to onions in the frying pan.
  6. Continue to cook.
  7. Mash potatoes, adding milk and ½ of the butter.
  8. Season potatoes with remainder of salt, pepper and garlic salt. (More or less may be added to taste.)
  9. Cover bottom of an 8 ½” x 12” x 2” oven proof dish with ½ of the mashed potatoes.
  10. Cover potatoes with meat and vegetable mixture when it's finished cooking.
  11. Spread remaining potatoes on top.
  12. Spread remaining butter on top of the potatoes.
  13. Sprinkle the grated cheese on top.
  14. Bake for about 20 minutes, until cheese is melted and potatoes are browned.
