Published In The Great North Arrow, Aug 1, 2024: Now It's Broke

Now It’s Broke - jim Young "You can't always get what you want..."- Mick Jagger & Keith Richards CORRECTION: I would like to point out that in my article entitled “If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It” in the July 15th (Issue 14 - Volume: 11) of the Great North Arrow, I noted that Gerry’s General Store in Restoule and Trout Creek General Store were LCBO Convenience Outlets. However, I neglected to mention that Foote’s General Store at the corners of Hwys 534 and 654 in Nipissing is also an LCBO Convenience Outlet authorized to sell alcohol. However when I recently stopped in at Foote’s General Store to apologize for the oversight, I was shocked to see so many empty shelves. While there was plenty of beer available, the liquor shelves were noticeably bare and contained one bottle of Kahlua and about ½ dozen bottles of McGuiness products, such as Creme de Cacao. Although Doug Ford is quick to brag about 2,300 locations to purchase alcohol in Ontario even with the LCBO on ...

Published In The Great North Arrow, July 1, 2024: Memories Of Mayra

Image
Memories Of Mayra - jim Young “It’s a little bit of bad, for those who want something good.” - right off the can. The last time we were in Cuba there were a lot of shortages at the resort we visited, including alcoholic beverages. That’s not a complaint, just a sad statement of the affairs of a country upon whom the United States of America has unjustly enforced an unreasonable embargo. But that didn’t dampen our vacation. When the bar ran out of one drink, we quickly substituted another.  The two drinks we missed the most however, were mint flavoured Mojitos and Coconut flavoured Pina Coladas. Lucky for us, Mojitos were featured on one day of our holiday. On other days we were able to find an accommodating bartender, Mayra, to make us real Pina Coladas using a fresh coconut that we had conscripted one of the life guards to acquire for us. When we returned home from our vacation we gave special thanks to the abundance we are fortunate to have here in Canada. So when I spied ...

Smoking In The Boys' Room

Image
Smoking In The Boys' Room - jim Young “Smokin' in the boys' room.  Smokin’ in the boys’ room. Now teacher don't you fill me up with your rules But everybody knows that smokin' ain't allowed in school Checkin' out the halls, makin' sure the coast is clear Lookin' in the stalls, ‘No, there ain't nobody here!’” - Cub Koda and Michael Lutz from Brownsville Station I was just 13 years old when I started high school in Grade 9 at Barrie District Central Collegiate. I was about a year younger than most of my fellow students but that wasn’t why I didn’t smoke. Most of my friends smoked and most of them were underage too. The age limit to purchase cigarettes was 16 in those days but all any 13 year old needed to get cigarettes was to have an older friend or a forged note from one of their parents. It was common practice for parents to send children to the store with a note to purchase cigarettes on their behalf. So it had nothing to do with me being under...

Lick A Liquor Lollipop!

Image
- jim Young “That’s one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.” - Neil Armstrong “Sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows; everything that's wonderful is sure to come your way.” - Marvin Hamlish & Howard Liebling So... Today is National Moon Day AND it is National Lollipop Day. You can either celebrate the date that man first walked on the moon in 1969 (or didn't if you're a conspiracy theorist) by: 1) taking a walk on the moon,  OR 2) licking a Lollipop in recognition of the sweet treat that has been arouLnd since the middle ages. Not being an overly ambitious sort, I prefer the latter.  And here’s a fun “adult” version of the lollipop that you might want to lick today. It’s just one of over 100 cocktail recipes for a book I am working on tentatively titled “Cocktails For Two” that I hope to publish later this year. Liquor Lollipops Stuff You’ll Need: 4 oz Hard Liquor of your choice ¾ cup Water 3 cup Sugar ½ cup Corn Syrup 1 splash Flavouring (optional and your c...
